COSA will initially focus its projects in Northern Region of Thailand and aim to include shared borders between Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos in the future. Each of these countries has a high number of children who become victims of sexual exploitation and child-trafficking networks, largely due to the many social disadvantages families often face.
Thailand in recent years has experienced a steady economic rise, creating job opportunities, better wages and a general increase in living standards. This socio-economic incline has created a magnet for traffickers and illegal migrants seeking greater opportunities. Women and children from all over South East Asia are smuggled into Thailand and forced into slave labor, often being sexual exploited and abused.
The number of victims being trafficked for sexual exploitation into Thailand has steadily risen over the last 10 years. COSA has therefore initiated its projects and various outreach programs within Thailand, building stronger communities and creating opportunities for children who are victims of sexual exploitation.
