COSA/Project Library

My name is Chelsea Laun and I am teaching English in Northern Thailand on a Fulbright scholarship. I conduct language, music, and yoga workshops at the Baan YuuSuk shelter on the weekends. I feel privileged to work with such an enthusiastic, hardworking, and creative group of girls. I continually witness the positive effects of implementing both educational and recreational activities into their daily lives. From flute lessons, to yoga sessions, to reading and writing activities—the girls at Baan Yuu Suk light up at any opportunity to learn something new.

I'm a firm believer in the power of reading and writing. Reading offers endless opportunities for intellectual and emotional growth—and it's fun too! On average, Thais read less than two books a year—far behind the majority of their Southeast Asian neighbors. I want to encourage the girls at Baan Yuu Suk to think of reading as a recreational skill: an infinite window to a greater understanding of the world. Similarly, writing can offer a creative outlet for stress or for past traumatic experiences.

Unfortunately the girls' desire to learn does not always match up with available resources. While many of the girls yearn to read and write, a lack of books and educational materials severely hinders their literary pursuits. Because of these limitations, I've decided to start a Library Project at Baan Yuu Suk. The project will raise funds for books, educational materials, (in both Thai and English) and creative writing workbooks.

The Library Project will not just provide books. I will also organize English reading lessons alongside Thai language creative writing workshops. I wholeheartedly believe that incorporating a consistent reading and writing schedule into the girls' lives will create invaluable opportunities for personal and academic development.
